DigiTales
Company: Hi8us Projects
Project Type:
International Digital Storytelling
Group: Several projects and groups of different ages
Date:
2005 – 2008

Description: We had not worked on the international stage before ITM, but Equal provided us with an exciting opportunity to establish new links with like-minded organisations across Europe. Our main project was DigiTales, a pan-European digital storytelling initiative involving people making short films about their lives.

Participants attended a short workshop and learnt how to write a script, edit photos and drawings, and turn this material into a two-minute film, which was then posted onto the DigiTales website and shown locally. In this way personal stories were exhibited and exchanged across national boundaries and, as the volume of work grew, a patchwork-quilt of personal moments built up to create an intriguing picture of the diversity of experience within contemporary Europe.

Our storytellers included: Roma communities in Eastern Slovakia; Muslim women living in Amsterdam; and young visually impaired music students in London. The success of DigiTales was showcased at Celebrating Diversity in the Media in Europe, an international DigiTales conference at FACT, Liverpool’s Foundation for Art & Creative Technology, where films and stories were presented to an audience from across Europe.
